FORUM ON PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT ORGANIZED FOR NON-TEACHING STAFF.

The Federation of Environmental Journalist (FEJ), in collaboration with Jekora Ventures, an Accra based waste management company carried out a sensitization exercise on waste separation to members of the non-teaching staff of Ghana Institute Of Journalism.

The exercise forms part of efforts by the Federation to maintain a cleaner environment, while contributing to the recycling campaign being encouraged across the country.

The innovations manager for Jekora Ventures Akua Akyea Nkrumah was present on the day and took the attendees through the various aspects of the separation exercise.

She explained that three main waste bins, one for organic materials like left over food, vegetables, bones and fish scales etc, while the other two for will be for paper and plastic, respectively are needed to ensure that separation is done effectively.

Madam Akua Akyea, addressing the gathering

Akua Akyea noted that the basis for segregation of waste before collection is to make service delivery efficient and effective and minimize the amount of land filled waste, since the sites are limited, as well as gain value from secondary raw materials through recycling.

She further bemoaned that although her outfit has donated fifteen bins to that effect, the separation exercise on campus has been poorly done.

She however received assurance from members of the non-teaching staff of their commitment in ensuring its success this time around.

The education on waste separation continued as the head of innovations at Jekora ventures Akua Akyea Nkrumah, together with executives of FEJ, went round the classrooms to get the students informed.
